National Convention
Greetings to all, hoping you are having a terrific Summer. We have so much to report that we almost don’t know were to start…let’s just hope you enjoy this issue as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together. Let’s start with the 48th National Convention held at The Doral Resort in Miami, Florida. Over 450 attendees, including our Pasadena Foothill members Karen Moffitt, Lisa Begerow, Norma Arredondo, and of course myself representing as your President.

After taking a red-eyed flight, Lisa, Eren Ramirez (Theta Rho President), and myself were running on adrenaline when we attended the opening Ceremony themed Red/White/Blue. It was a great way to start our Convention with a welcome from our National President, Michelle Smith and the Council members. The evening came alive with music and Sisterhood as Dr. Mari Ann Callais, National President of Theta Phi Alpha entertained us with her guitar and explored how living Delta Zeta every day not only honors the Sorority’s Founders, but provides value-based guidelines to all of us. The evening included a spectacular fire works show from our beautiful towered flower centerpieces. We also got a chance to reunite with Suzanne Salcedo Hsu ÈÑ‘92 who is now serving as CCD in Ohio and sends her regards!

Saturday started with our Financial Program/Breakfast where the Sorority’s Budget was reviewed and presented. Details on the Depaw University financial resolutions were also given and explained there was no money exchanged between the parties. We then proceeded to our 1st Business meeting where Michelle Smith gave her State of the Sorority which will be sent to us via email at a later time so we can share for all of you. We also found out Donna Sinclair (GWA Development Chair) celebrated her birthday June 28 during our convention.

The highlight of the day was the evening Awards Banquet…you’re going to love this, so keep reading…Because of all our efforts, contributions and hard work we, PASADENA FOOTHILL was a big WINNER at this Convention. We have been honored with 1 out of 6 Silver Awards in Chapter Excellence. Remember 2 yrs ago
we received the traveling Heritage Cup? Well, though it was hard to give it back, this time around we received our very own Silver Award in Philanthropy. Yeah, Us!
Our Great Western Area was very well represented as the Long Beach, Westchester, San Fernando Valley and Orange County also walked away with Silver awards. See our Convention Awards Section for the details.

Sunday had an earlier start with 458 members in attendance to our 2nd business meeting. A beautiful memorial service was held, Foundation awards were announced and voting instructions were given among other sorority business. We followed the
meeting with the Carolyn Barnes Gullatt Symposium where Dr. Lori Hart Ebert raised our own expectations of Greek life. Her entertaining and interactive presentation “What does thou speak of thou? Gave us a different perspective on how ÄZ makes us better women. She encouraged us to tell our stories and helped us rethink on how our alumnae chapters benefit our new and collegiate members. In small, she encourages us to “TELL OUR STORY” and have the “guts” to stand out as Delta Zetas because we are unique and strong women no matter where we are in life. “Success is peace of mind that is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming”. Together we can make a difference and we contribute to the success of our Sisterhood and Sorority.

Sunday we also learned that Karen Moffitt celebrated her 40th Wedding Anniversary and Lisa Begerow was also celebrating her 8th Wedding Anniversary. Though their husbands were not in attendance they celebrated among sisters. A beautiful Leadership Achievement Luncheon was held that afternoon with the Panhellenic Flags parade and special guests were all introduced. Our collegian leaders were recognized as well as special thank you to all the alumnae volunteers throughout. After all the business and long day, we were all rewarded with a Caribbean themed dinner for our Fun night where once again, our collegians take center stage while performing different skits and songs for all in attendance. Our Region X and Great Western Area alumnae stood out in pink t-shirts with Zebra prints and “Wild About DZ” slogan. Alumnae were not left behind as we danced our hearts out to different music representing the different eras…a fun way to show the last standing was the oldest member in attendance. Monday was no exception to our final business meeting where the reports of the elections, resolutions and courtesy committees were given and Installations of the National Council also took place. Among other highlights of the day was the Initiation Ceremony for our newest alumna member and later that evening our closing Banquet Celebration. Remember all those surprises we talked about earlier? Well, PASADENA FOOTHILL was once again highlighted at this banquet as we had the honor to receive TWO (yes, 2) more Silver Awards. Please refer to our list below for details.

So you see, we have come a long way and yes, everything we do counts…we don’t need awards to remind us of that though it’s very nice to be recognized nationwide. What a privilege it was to represent you all at convention, maybe in 2010 you can join us as we celebrate our 49th Convention in Tucson, Arizona. Should we say, road trip? And what goals would you like to set for the next biennium? So, to leave you with something else shared at Convention “Pink of Perfection” remember that all our individual goals help make our chapter stronger. Every choice we make today counts twice, once for YOU and once for our Sorority! As you go on to your daily lives, remember our promise to our Sisterhood and remember to ask yourself “How have YOU lived our ritual on your daily life?”
